Abstract

Paper presented at the 21st Annual South African Transport Conference 15 - 18 July 2002 "Towards building capacity and accelerating delivery", CSIR International Convention Centre, Pretoria, South Africa.
The outstanding success of Bitumen-rubber (B-R) asphalt over the past 15 to 20 years in South Africa has revived interest in this product in recent years. This success became prevalent in 1998 with the report on the 12-year service life of bitumen-rubber asphalt on the Buccleuch Interchange [Potgieter et al. 1998]. This paper focuses on the practical experiences gained in recent years during the design and construction of the new generation B-R asphalt with special reference to the behaviour of the B-R binder over time.
