Item Belangrikheid van besoeke aan nuwe intrekkers as deel van die werkprogram van die gemeentepredikant(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Van Zyl, P.J.; Dreyer, T.F.J. (Theunis Frederik Jacobus), 1946-In the current theological literature about parish-visiting, a gap is identified with regard to the importance of visiting newcomers in a congregation. With this in mind an empirical study was undertaken to evaluate the matter in actual practice. The starting point (hypothesis) of this study is: Visits to newcomers is a very important facet of any parish minister's work. Such visits can help to establish a pastoral relationship between minister and member which is essential for the minister's pastoral and other work in the congregation. By means of an empirical study the above-mentioned hypothesis was tested and a preliminary theory with regard to the importance of visitation to newcomers was formulated. After this theory has been tested against the directives of Scripture, a proposal is made for a new theory to underpin the practice within the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van AfrikaItem The trial of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Bammel, E.The gospel of Mark contains summaries, a 'short report' and the long report on the deliberations of the Sanhedrin. The latter consists of four fragments strung together by the redactor and put under the vinculum of the nocturnal session. Each of these passages contains information, the relevance of which is discussed in this paper.Item Genoegsame voorwaardes vir buite-aardse rasionaliteit : filosofiese en teologiese oorwegings(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Antonites, Alex J.Sufficient conditions would include confirmation of extraterrestrial intelligence. Accordingly the SETI-projects of NASA and some universities are explained and examined. The possibility of UFO's is taken into account and evidence evaluated. In respect of philosophical considerations, the validity of inductive strategies is investigated as well as epistemological problems relating of rational communication. Theological considerations bring to the fore the imago Dei problem. It is concluded that in the light of both neccessary and sufficient conditions the issue no longer is of a scientific fiction nature but is on a firm scientific path.Item What has Galilee to do with Jerusalem? Political aspects of the Jesus movement(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Horsley, Richard A.Adopting a perspective of class awareness, this study proposes that Jesus and his movements in Palestine did not simply have political implications but were engaged in social-political organising that brought them into political conflict with the Jerusalem and Roman rulers. This disposition has its roots in the distinctiveness of Galilee/Galileans as setting for Jesus and his followers.Item The shaping of rationality in science and religion(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Van Huyssteen, J. WentzelIn this paper the focus is on the extreme epistemological complexity of the relationship between religion and science as two dominant forces in our culture today. This complexity is aggravated by a seemingly conflictual postmodern, pluralist challenge to a culture that already reveals itself as decidedly empirically-minded. For theology and science a meaningful dialogue becomes possible only if both modes of reflection are willing to move away from overblown foundationalist epistemologies and, for theology at least, from the intellectual coma of fideism. The paper finally argues for a postfoundationalist epistemology where theology and science, although very different modes of reflection, do share the richness of the resources of human rationality. In so doing it attempts to answer three crucial questions: i) are there good reasons for still seeing the natural sciences as our clearest available example of rationality at work? ii) If so, does the rationality of theological reflection in any way overlap with scientific rationality? iii) Even if there are impressive overlaps between these two modes of rationality, how would the rationality of science and the rationality of religious reflection differ?Item Roeping van die kerk in 'n veranderende Suid-Afrika(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Van Wyk, D.J.C. (Daniel Johannes Cornelius) (jr)In this article an extensive survey of the purpose, the methods and the contents of the late David Bosch's seminal work, Transforming Mission, is presented. On the basis of this survey, preliminary critical observations are made concerning the mission of the church in a new South Africa. It is argued that Bosch's contribution is of crucial importance for all future reflections on the foundations of mission.Item Buite-aardse rasionaliteit : uitvlug in fantasie of grootste uitdaging ooit aan filosofie en teologie?(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Antonites, Alex J.The concept of extra-terrestrial intelligence was first mooted by philosophers like Aristotle and Lucretius as well as natural scientists like Huygens and Whewell. It is considered whether UFO reports rather than indicating something real provide a symptom of the current religious cultural situation in Europe. Should rational life elsewhere in the universe be real, it is argued that biological life would be a neccessary condition. The divergence and convergence hypotheses are examined. The fundamental prerequisite is the existence of other solar systems with planets other than our own. Insights from biology and astronomy are placed in the context of philosophical discourse.Item Response to the papers of Prof T F J Dreyer and Prof J H Koekemoer, read at the symposium : Die roeping van die kerk in die nuwe Suid-Afrika(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Banda, Z.J.Item Uitdaging aan teologiese opleiding in die NHKA en die HKSA(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Koekemoer, J.H. (Johannes Hendrik), 1935-We live today in a world that is profoundly different from that of the past. In understanding the need of theological training for the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van Afrika and the Hervormde Kerk in Suidelike Afrika certain factors have to be taken in consideration. Among these factors are concepts, assumptions, prejudices, new knowledge, changing methods, differing contexts and altered world views. These are entangled with economic, social, political and scientific changes as well as with linguistic and religious developments. This discussion takes place in the hope that both churches will benefit from this.Item Praktiese kerkwees in die nuwe Suid-Afrika(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Dreyer, T.F.J. (Theunis Frederik Jacobus), 1946-Political and social changes in the new South Africa will impose a new praxis with far reaching consequences, especially for the Afrikaans speaking churches. Although it is still premature to define the new praxis the church has to be prepared to accept the challenges. A few studies in this regard have already been published. This paper is an attempt to draw certain guidelines, based on available research done in this area.Item Etiek in die nuwe Suid-Afrika(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 1996) Van Wyk, I.W.C. (Ignatius William Charles)This paper was read at a symposium where the calling of the church in the 'New South Africa' was discussed by delegates of two churches, the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van Afrika and the Hervomde Kerk in Suidelike Afrika. The 'New South Africa' will oblige the NHKA van Afrika as well as the HKSA to develop a new orientation in ethical matters. The churches will have to concentrate on a wider range of ethical problems that were not in focus in the 'Old South Africa '. The new situation is going to force White and Black Christians to work together harmoniously. Suggestions are made as to how the churches can concentrate more effectively on ethical questions.
