Abstract
Membrane technology for gas separation has apparent advantages such as compactness, ease of operation, and the possibility of incorporation into hybrid systems. This review analyzes the superstructure-based optimization models for membrane gas separation systems reported in the literature. The review describes and analyzes the membrane permeation models embedded in the optimization models and solution approaches, the superstructures presented, the objective functions adopted, and outcomes for different application cases. The progress is reported, and challenges and opportunities for future research are suggested. The presented review would be useful to researchers and engineers in membrane technology research and development and could lead to the deployment and adoption of membranes in various applicable industries, such as carbon capture.
